Where I Stand On The Issues

America is a country of immigrants, and we celebrate that diversity. However, immigrants should come to the United States legally, and illegal immigration should not be rewarded. Congress should pass legislation to immediately release funding to construct a wall spanning our southern border, deport illegal aliens who commit crimes, and eliminate any federal funding for sanctuary cities or states.

We were endowed by our Creator with inherent and inalienable rights; that among these, are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The first of these rights is life. We should protect and value life from the very first heart beat to the last.

America’s national security and quality of life depend upon our agricultural prowess. Free and fair trade is needed to expand American exports into new markets, and trade deals should ensure American products are not at a competitive disadvantage. Continued work to eliminate regulations and lower taxes will help agriculture thrive.

Foreign policy should always put America first. We should stand firm behind our allies and firmly against our enemies. America should lead with strength and ensure that our national sovereignty is preserved. Threats to our security should be swiftly eliminated and we should aggressively protect our interests. The United States can achieve peace through strength.

Americans deserve to keep more of their hard-earned money. Taxes are too high and unfair. We must eliminate the death tax, continue to work to lower taxes, and eliminate burdensome regulations. Congress needs to pass a balanced budget, cut spending, and start to reduce our national debt immediately. Our children should not inherit our debts.

We have a constitutional right to keep and bear arms. This right should not be infringed. Firearms are the first line of defense against violent criminals and no law abiding American should have barriers erected which impair their self-defense.

America is free because of the brave. We owe the best to our men and women who have risked their lives to protect us. Veterans Affairs needs a complete overhaul. Our veterans deserve the same, if not better, healthcare than the plans enjoyed by Members of Congress.

Our healthcare system is deteriorating, insurance rates are on the rise, and accessibility to services is becoming more difficult. Congress should allow a more competitive market, even across state lines, abolish the employer mandates, reduce coverage requirements to allow Americans to choose the plan which best fits their needs, and require more transparency in the healthcare market, such as price disclosure so that consumers may accurately compare prices.

Parents should have more options available to educate their children. School choice will enable parents to choose which educational setting will best help their child achieve their own American dream. We can greatly reduce our federal Department of Education and send more funding back to states in the form of block grants to allow state governments to better educate children.

Trump’s approval rating is up to 47% not 51% but that is going to change with the economy headed down due to the President’s tariffs supported by people like Dave Hughes. I heard Dave Hughes in the debate talking about decreasing the deficit when the Republican party voted for tax cuts for the wealthy that increased the deficit despite claims that the cuts would pay for themselves and the economy would “take off like a rocket ship.” Trump’s advisors told him this wouldn’t work. Yet Dave Hughes is on board with all things Trump.
Despite the rise in mass shootings Dave Hughes is against any type of common sense measure which polls show have overwhelming public support. Collin Peterson supports raising the minimum age for purchasing assault weapons to 21. Dave Hughes said there should not be barriers to protecting oneself. How does not owning an assault rifle until the age of 21 affect one’s ability to protect oneself? The uneducated population buys into the scare tactics about gun safety. Even the NRA has changed its stance on some of the common sense gun laws.
During the debate Dave Hughes promoted all of these Pie in the Sky wonderful ideas about balancing the budget by just cutting spending. Wait until your Social Security and Medicare get cut. Very real proposals that have been brought up. I’m also not sure how Dave Hughes proposes to do this. As Collin Peterson brought up, the budget was last balanced in the Clinton administration and repeated efforts to balance it have failed. How does Dave Hughes propose to balance the budget when no one else has?
On the subject of health care he had rather vague plans. Nothing was said about keeping coverage for pre-existing conditions which most Americans agree is of utmost importance. The GOP’s opponents have been bringing up the GOP opposition to taking away coverage for pre-existing conditions. Now the Republicans are running scared because they know it is a top issue and are saying that is not true. It is absolutely true because you cannot say you are going to repeal the ACA (Obamacare) and keep coverage for pre-existing conditions. That guaranteed coverage is part of the ACA. Dave Hughes is reiterating the party line on health care reform. Their ideas are not economically feasible. Health works on a pool of people both healthy and not. You can’t remove mandates for coverage, say you are going to cover pre-existing conditions and lower costs. Insurance companies go bankrupt with such plans.
Dave Hughes is pandering to Trump’s constituency which is mostly white, lower class males with only a high school education. Those are the people who believe Dave Hughes is going to balance the budget by cutting spending—but of course not on anything that affects them and lower their health care costs but not take away guaranteed coverage for anyone. Oh, if you vote for Dave you will still be able to protect yourself because you can buy an assault rifle at the age pf 18.
Unfortunately, as Jeff Gieseke said, this district is full of too many of those racist ignorant Trump supporters. They don’t read in order to make informed decisions so they are sucked in by all of this that Dave and others like him are promising, no matter how ludicrous. When we first moved here, I couldn’t believe that I was in Minnesota when I saw a pickup truck driving around with a Confederate flag. That is the constituency.
Everything that the Republicans accused Obama and the Democrats of is okay if they or the President does it. Spend more time golfing, great. Increase the deficit, wonderful. I bring this up because Dave is evidently okay with all of this.
As to the “movement of hate and incivility” —are you kidding me? The President calls names and tweets hate almost daily which in turn incites the nutcases to commit violence with all his rhetoric. He has repeatedly said that he would like to “hit” individuals who disagree with him and recently praised a candidate who assaulted a reporter. In case you believe this is made up bynthe liberal media, there are written revords and videotape of all this. The hate crimes have been perpetrated by racists and white supremacists, not members of “the opposing party”. Please read today’s news of the explosive devices sent to Obama, the Clintons, CNN, etc.
In the debate, Dave kept repeating that a vote for Collin Peterson is a vote for Nancy Pelosi, even though Peterson has the highest bipartisan rating. Yet Dave totally embraces the Trump agenda. A vote for Dave Hughes is a vote for Donald Trump.

Liberals are trapped in a self-reinforcing cycle. When they use their positions in American culture to lecture, judge and disdain, they push more people into an opposing coalition that liberals are increasingly prone to think of as deplorable. That only validates their own worst prejudices about the other America.

Those prejudices will be validated even more if Mr. Trump wins re-election in 2020, especially if he wins a popular majority. That’s not impossible: The president’s current approval ratings are at 51 percent, up from just a few months ago.

Liberals are inadvertently making that outcome more likely. It’s not too late to stop.

Finally, someone with common sense and the knowledge needed to serve our country. Thank you Dave for stepping forward and running for office. We need more individuals like you who will work for the good of our state and country, not for special interest groups. And as to the negative comment below, those seem to be typical of the growing movement of hate and incivility spread upon the opposing party.

I applaud your bold statements and support of our constitution. I am greatly saddened and sickened that the only other reaction on this site is one of the liberal trolls who have done nothing but drag this country to its basest level. Good luck today and I will make sure that I vote.

You are wrong on every issue. I sure hope you lose but sadly this district is full of racist Trump supporters, just like you are so you have a good chance here. Good luck to you, I sure hope You lose. People who share your views are the last people this country needs leading us. You say nothing about climate change or the environment. Let me guess, like most republicans you don’t believe its real or happening. Meaning if you get to congress you will work for big oil and coal companies. You will full your pockets with their money instead of caring about future generations of Americans. I want my kids to have a future, and my kid’s kids to have a future. You are more worried about what the demographics are like in America when my children are grown up than you are worried about how the world’s climate will look. Trumpism is wrong, the only reason Trumps base will never leave him is because of blatant racism. Trump gives racists a voice again, he spreads hate and lies more than any president has ever lied. The ignorant biggoted people who support Trump are the same people who will support you. All you republicans do in this Trump era is feast on white anxiety. Uneducated morons mostly who follow like sheep just because somebody is promising to keep the bad bad brown people away. You may win my distract and get the seat this year but your party will not maintain power for long. It starts this fall when you lose the majority and gets worse in 2020 when the Trump nightmare ends because he is defeated. Young people will be motivated to vote and people with your stances will not win. You can keep your old white biggoted supporters who know nothing other than their small rural lives. Most of them have only seen a handful of colored people in their whole life but they are still experts on the subject and they know they are better than non-whites. I hate what your party has become, your party has become completely corrupt, working for the wrong people for a long time. If I was you I would keep running on the anti-immigrant platform you are, cash in on that white anxiety and flat out racism. When you get to congress you can work for big corporations and cut their taxes, you can work for big oil/coal. You can work for huge corrupt insurance companies and the big corrupt pharmacy industry. You will become very rich like your republican friends when u go to work for all these filthy rich corporations. Like me I know most Americans just love having to pay $200 bucks just for seeing a doctor for a simple illness like strep throat, of you need surgery or something good luck, even a simple outpatient procedure is at least $3,000-$6,000. The new republican party for you, slaves to filthy rich special interests, working tirelessly for them and doing nothing for average hard working Americans who haven’t seen their pay rise for decades now. Your party is going to run this once great country into the ground in a hurry if you can. If you want to really do right by the voters in this distract you should drop out of the race. Your party does not care the slightest amount about poor struggling people who have very little oppurtunities for work, which is a very large percent of the distract. So I really really hope you lose again, and if you do please dont run again in the future. America does not need anymore people in government who share Trumps views and turn a blind eye to his corruptness and constant lies and join him in the spreading of hate and racism. You will never get my vote and I promise to do my best to get as many others as I can to vote against you. No more ignorance, no more rich powerful companies coming first over the average man. They can have more tax breaks when they learn how to pay people a livable wage! Might cost some CEO’s some money but I think with all the raises they have given themselves over the last 3 decades they can handle it don’t you? Of course you don’t, you are hoping to be in Washington working for them real soon.
