NRCC places Collin Peterson’s Minnesota 7th Congressional Seat in Crosshairs
For Immediate Release, February 10th, 2017 – (Karlstad, MN) National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) Chairman Steve Stivers on February 8th announced initial offensive targets for the 2018 cycle. These 36 seats are held by Democrats that are out of touch with their districts and will be targeted by the NRCC for the next 21 months. In this targeted list is the 7th Congressional District of western Minnesota, the seat held by 26-year incumbent Democrat Collin Peterson.
“The success of our government depends on Republicans maintaining a strong majority in the House. We owe the American people assurance that the agenda we were elected on — healthcare reform, a stronger national defense, and more good-paying jobs – is fulfilled,” said Stivers.
“Our battle plan will put us on offense in 36 Democrat-held House districts. Our strategy will allow us to be competitive in races throughout the country and achieve our overall goal of keeping Republicans in control of the House.”
This comes as music to the ears of Dave Hughes. Hughes was the 2016 Republican challenger to Peterson. Democrat Peterson was narrowly victorious with only 52% of the vote in 2016. Hughes received no help from the RNC or PACs outside his district in the 2016 election cycle. The US Air Force Combat Vet Hughes spent $0.12 per vote compared to Peterson’s $3.83 per vote. Hughes came closer than any Republican Challenger since 1994. Hughes filed the appropriate paperwork with the Federal Election Commission for the 2018 campaign just weeks after his narrow defeat.
“I learned a lot in 2016, and the path to victory clear to me now. I’m actively working to connect with the voter. I’m doing a lot of radio and events. Fundraising is at the top of my list. I’m taking the momentum of the grassroots efforts, and my increased name recognition onto victory in 2018. I’m going to be at all the fairs and as many parades as I can this summer and next. I will keep pressing onto victory. I will be up for Republican endorsement, and then onto the Primary and General. I am energized and excited to serve my neighbors of the 7th Congressional District.” -Dave Hughes, 2018 Republican Candidate for Congress, MN-7
Hughes’ Constitutional Conservative views are much needed in western Minnesota at this time. Obamacare is hurting our farmers who represent our number one economic sector. Peterson has made numerous mistakes in not repealing it in over 60 attempts, including the most recent attempt at repeal, when he voted no in the first month of the new Congress. Obamacare is destructive to our farms and our small businesses. “It breaks my heart what I hear from farmers. One farmer was married and has 4 children. He was paying $3,800 per month for his MNSure with a $15,000 deductible. And this is the Democrats idea of affordable?! Not to our farmers and small business owners. I am crushed for them! I’m heartsick I’m not in Congress right now to make that “yes” vote for repeal. I really hope our Republican Congress can get this fixed before I get the opportunity to make it right for the district after a 2018 victory. This needs to be repealed now!” -Dave Hughes, 2018 Republican Candidate for Congress, MN-7
Peterson isn’t leading on the Immigration/Refugee issue, which is a growing concern for Minnesotans. Hughes will lead on this. “We can all see the concerns all around us. We had a terrorist attack not far from us recently. We are sitting right on the border. I support an immediate halt to the refugee resettlement program, and a pause on immigration!” -Dave Hughes, 2018 Republican Candidate for Congress, MN-7
Hughes will lead on Education as well. Hughes wants to abolish the U.S. Department of Education, which is currently being sponsored by Congressman Massie. “As a father, I care deeply about education and the future of our children. Just 6-8% of our Minnesota Public Education system is funded by the Federal Government, and those dollars are sent to us with myriad abusive strings attached. Let’s stop sending our money to the DOE, and keep our money here. I have faith in our teachers and school boards to make the best education for our children. We have great schools, and we can keep making them better. We just need the Feds out of our education pocketbooks, taking their share for themselves, and ties that bind the hands of our local teachers.” -Dave Hughes, 2018 Republican Candidate for Congress, MN-7
Hughes is hopeful and energized. There are many important issues Collin Peterson is not tending to as they need to be. Hughes is looking forward to taking his place on the House Agriculture Committee. Western Minnesotans need new representation in the U.S. House of Representatives that better aligns with our values and world view. And the NRCC agrees.
Clearly the NRCC sees the change coming in western Minnesota, and Dave Hughes is excited to serve his friends and neighbors after he wins in 2018.
